Do’s and Don’ts: Hiking in the Andes of Peru

Authentic South American Stories

Peru offers amazing landscapes and activities for outdoor lovers. Hiking in the Andes Mountains is an unparalleled experience, letting you enjoy stunning scenery and discover ancient wonders like Machu Picchu. To make the most of your hiking in Peru, here are some do’s and don’ts to keep in mind:

Do’s:

 1. Prepare for Altitude:
Many hiking trails in Peru reach high elevations, so it’s essential to acclimatize gradually to prevent altitude sickness. Take your time to adjust before embarking on challenging hikes. You need at least 2 days prior to your hike.
2. Understand the seasons
Understanding the seasons in Peru is essential for planning your hiking adventures, as they offer different experiences depending on whether you visit during the dry or wet season.
3. Pack Essentials:
Ensure you have the necessary gear for hiking, including sturdy footwear, layers of clothing, sunscreen, a hat, plenty of water, snacks, a first aid kit, and navigation tools. Don’t forget to pack rain gear, as weather conditions in the mountains can change rapidly.
4. Respect Local Culture:
Peru’s mountain regions are often home to indigenous communities with rich cultural traditions. Be respectful of their customs, ask for permission before entering sacred sites, and support local businesses along your hiking route.
5. Stay Hydrated and Fueled:
Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated, especially at higher altitudes where dehydration is common. Bring high-energy snacks to maintain your energy levels during long hikes.
6. Leave No Trace:
Practice Leave No Trace principles by staying on designated trails, properly disposing of waste, and minimizing your impact on the environment. Respect wildlife and avoid feeding or approaching animals.
7. Do as the Locals do:
In the Andes, locals drink coca tea or chew coca leaves to help alleviate symptoms of altitude sickness. Sugar also helps.

Don’ts:

1. Underestimate Altitude:
Altitude sickness can be serious and potentially life-threatening. Avoid pushing yourself too hard and listen to your body. If you experience symptoms of altitude sickness, descend to a lower elevation immediately.

2. Ignore Weather Warnings:
Be mindful of weather forecasts and plan your hikes accordingly. Avoid hiking in severe weather conditions such as thunderstorms, heavy rain, or blizzards.

3. Disrespect Sacred Sites:
Peru is home to numerous archaeological sites and sacred places. Show respect for these cultural treasures by refraining from climbing on ruins, touching artifacts, or leaving behind litter.

4. Overexert Yourself:
Pace yourself during hikes and take breaks as needed to rest and hydrate. Avoid overexertion, especially at high altitudes where physical exertion can be more taxing.
