Sucre Proud, genteel Sucre is Bolivia’s most beautiful city and the symbolic heart of the nation. It was here that independence was proclaimed. Set in a valley surrounded by low mountains, Sucre enjoys a mild and comfortable climate. It’s still a center of learning, and both the city and its university enjoy reputations as focal points of progressive thought within the country. Sucre has grown and learned a lot, it is the heart of tourism in Bolivia with some new hotels, more luxury and more things to do. Our 2 new favorites are: visiting a traditional hat factory and see how Bolivia’s famous hats are made, and walk an ancient Inka trail and visit a local weavers community.
Santa Cruz & Samaipata Santa Cruz de la Sierra is the capital of the Santa Cruz department in eastern Bolivia and the largest city in the country. It is the perfect hub for exploring eastern Bolivia, a land rife with quaint villages, UNESCO-protected Jesuit churches and an abundance of natural beauty. With our rental car, we traveled for 4 days around Santa Cruz, visiting Samapaita and Refugio de los Volcanes. It was a great experience! Samaipata is still a true off the beaten track experience, it has some amazing hiking possibilities and exploring the National Park of Amboro. There is no luxury, but for the adventure seeker, the Santa Cruz region holds many interesting options.
